Application of ionizing radiation in studies of biomarkers of individual susceptibility

چکیده
Humans and living organisms are unavoidably exposed to various environmental genotoxins. Genotoxic exposures may result from endogenous mutagens, (via cellular metabolic processes associated with oxygen free radical induction) or from exogenous mutagens present in the environment (as a pollution of air, water and soil, e.g. motor-vehicle emissions, pesticides, industrial effluents), or in occupational exposures (e.g. pesticides, petrochemicals), or from diet (e.g. substances naturally present in the food, generated during cooking, or added for food preservation), life style (e.g. tobacco smoking, cosmetics), radiation (e.g. radon, diagnostic X-rays examinations) and medical procedures (e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy). The long list of genotoxins is consistent with evidence indicating that the great majority of cancer, in principle, is preventable because the factors that determine cancer incidence are largely exogenous or “environmental”. It has been estimated that perhaps 75−80% of all cancers in the United States Application of ionizing radiation in studies of biomarkers of individual susceptibility Antonina Cebulska-Wasilewska

Assessment of polymer composite reinforced with nanomaterial against ionizing radiation
Introduction: Unwanted exposure of ionizing radiation may result in carcinogenesis, cell mutations, and organ failure. High-atomic number elements such as lead, tungsten, bismuth have been traditionally used for radiation protection. Theoretical and practical studies have shown that a variety of shielding materials e.g. polymer composites (PCs) can be used for attenuation of th...
متن کاملRadioprotective effect of thymol against salivary glands dysfunction induced by ionizing radiation in rats
The aim of this study was to investigate the radioprotective effect of thymol as a natural product against salivary glands dysfunction induced by ionizing radiation in rats. The rats were treated with thymol at dose of 50 mg/Kg before exposure to radiation at dose 15Gy. Salivary gland function was evaluated with radioisotope scintigraphy and then salivary gland to background counts ratio was ca...
متن کاملEffect of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation on Biomarker of Oxidative Damage of DNA
Introduction: one of the most important complications of exposure to ionizing radiation is emergence of cancer tumors, which happens as a result of oxidative DNA. Therefore, the present study was conducted, aimed to measuring 8-DIHYDROxy- 2’- DEOXYGUANOSINE (8-OHdG) level in radiographers’ urine as oxidative damage biomarker, as well as comparing this biomarker with cumulative effective doses....

متن کاملRadiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation
Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects ...
